Bob Colacarro is an attorney with a broad array of legal experience. He began his career as a litigator at one of the world’s largest law firms. While there, he represented clients in federal and state courts across the country and in arbitration forums around the world. In addition, he developed a practice counseling clients in attempts to resolve business matters in a practical manner well in advance of the litigation process.

More recently, he spent 8 years as the General Counsel for one of the life settlement industry’s leading providers. In this role, Bob was responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the legal department, where he managed a staff of employees. In addition to negotiating and drafting agreements with the company’s customers and third-party business partners based domestically and abroad, Bob handled matters relating to compliance, employment issues and intellectual property, among others. He also managed one of the company’s operating departments and provided legal advice and strategic business solutions to the company’s management and Board of Directors. In addition, Bob gained experience advocating in front of state legislatures and departments of insurance on behalf of various stakeholders in the life settlements industry.

At EM3, Bob provides high-quality and innovative legal advice to clients both in and out of the life settlement industry. Bob is well-versed in all aspects of the life settlement transaction, and can guide clients through the secondary or tertiary market process. He can handle the usual negotiations and agreement drafting, but also brings the requisite experience and knowledge to assist clients with their business decisions relating to policy or portfolio sales or purchases. Bob spends a good amount of time assisting clients with portfolio due diligence to allow those clients to make informed investment decisions. He takes pride in his ability to provide his clients efficient and cost-effective solutions based on their specific needs. In addition, Bob helps clients with general corporate and transactional matters and can lead clients through the maze of dispute resolution to ensure that business conflicts are resolved as early and as quickly as possible with as little intrusion and expense as practicable.

Pro Bono Experience

Bob has performed a significant amount of pro bono legal work throughout his career. Among his achievements, he successfully appealed his client’s conviction to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit (U.S. v. Coffelt, 2005 U.S. App. LEXIS 22485 (October 18, 2005). Bob further represented his client on remand in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, secured his client’s release on Speedy Trial grounds and ultimately negotiated a favorable plea bargain and sentence significantly below the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
